FigCraft: Free Figma Alternative

Design interfaces with auto layout, components, prototypes and vector tools.

Free · No subscription · No account needed for local editing · Windows / macOS / Linux

FigCraft vs Figma

Good for…

  • Designing local interfaces with frames and auto layout.
  • Building reusable components, variants and colour variables.
  • Creating clickable prototypes.
  • Exporting images, vectors and PDF assets.

Not yet if you need…

  • Dependable exchange of every existing FIG file.
  • Figma plug-ins to run unchanged.
  • Mature hosted accounts, team permissions and cloud workflows.
  • Client designs to stay unchanged after FIG import and export.

Good for local interface work; check FIG exchange and sharing before moving team projects.

Keep Figma for dependable file exchange and established team or plug-in workflows.

The local editor brings frames, auto layout, components and vector tools together in a Figma-style workspace. Start with a small screen of your own, then choose whether the next person needs an editable project, an exported asset or online access.

Screenshots and results

The official screenshots show sample interface frames and a collection of button components. The first image above includes three artboards, the layer list and auto-layout controls.

Is FigCraft free?

Free

Local interface design is free, with no subscription.

No ArtCraft account

FigCraft's local editor works without an account.

Local editing offline

Your design stays on your computer while you edit offline; sharing or joining a file connects to a network.

ArtCraft's AI workbench is a separate product, and hosted generation uses credits. See AI Workbench and Is ArtCraft free? for that service.

FigCraft's live sharing is a preview. Online sharing uploads the file to a server, where it is stored unencrypted; edit and view links grant their respective access, so choose the sharing route and recipient before sending a link.

Keep your own saved project when using online sharing. A local project handoff and an online invitation give the recipient different ways to access your work.

Download and install

Choose the official FigCraft package for your system below. Craft Launcher can install and update several Craft apps from one place; FigCraft also has a separate download.

For several editing apps, use Craft Launcher to install, verify and update them.

Choose your system and processor to get an official package. The complete package list is available below.

Tutorials worth opening

Use the five steps above for a first local sketch. Open the official tour to choose the tool you need, then use the article for a broader introduction to how the app is organised.

What others say

One published article sees promise for local design while recommending Figma for established client and team work.

Pasquale Pillitteri

His article sees promise for students, solo designers and agent-driven screen sketches. He recommends waiting when daily work depends on client Figma files or mature team permissions. Read his article.

Can FigCraft open Figma files?

FIG import is best effort and FIG export is experimental. Check effects, images, prototypes and fonts after importing, then check the saved design in Figma before handing it back.

Format Open / save What to watch
FIG Import with limits; experimental export Check the design in the receiving app before delivery.
.figcraft Read and write Native local project file.
Figma design JSON Import Use a Figma design export; unrelated JSON files are not designs.
SVG / PNG / JPEG / WebP / PDF Import and export Choose vector, image or fixed-page output for the recipient's task.

Save your ongoing work as .figcraft and choose a separate asset export when that is what the recipient needs. An exported image shows a design, while an editable FIG handoff also needs its fonts, effects and prototype connections checked. See the full format reference.

Other free alternatives

Choose around your next design task and how you work with others. FigCraft suits local interface work; Penpot focuses on design and team handoff, while Pencil Project is another route for wireframes and interface models.

App Good for Free option
FigCraft Local interfaces, components and prototypes Free local editing without an account; FIG exchange and sharing need checking.
Penpot Design systems, prototypes and team handoff Open source and self-hostable; free cloud plan has team, storage and history limits.
Pencil Project Wireframes, flowcharts and interface models Free open-source desktop prototyping app.

FAQ

Do I need an ArtCraft subscription?

No. FigCraft's local design tools are free; the separate ArtCraft AI workbench uses credits for hosted generation.

Can I use FigCraft offline without an account?

Yes, local editing works offline without an account. Sharing or joining a file uses a network connection.

Will my Figma plug-ins work?

FigCraft has its own WebAssembly plug-in system. It does not run Figma plug-ins unchanged.

Can I send a FIG file back to a client?

FIG export is experimental. Check the returned design's effects, images, prototypes and fonts in Figma before delivery.

What happens when I share online?

The file is uploaded to a server and stored unencrypted there. Anyone with the corresponding edit or view link has that access; keep a saved local copy.
